My father James Eugene Mathews told me of his father’s (James Francis Mathews) relationship with Butch Cassidy. In 1981, six monthes before his death, my father (Gene) discussed his life in Baggs Wyoming. He said that when he was about six, Butch stopped by for a visit and spent the night. Gene also said that Butch helped build the Mathews family cabin and stayed there on numerous occasions.

Regardless of any of the accounts in books, South American police records, or rumors of Butches’ death in Bolivia in 1908, I believe Gene’s account of the circa 1908 Wyoming visit.

Another point to note is that the Mathews cabin is referred to on the Baggs website as the Gaddis/ Mathews cabin. The Gaddis name shouldn’t be included in that reference.
